Lee Martini
Practice member of the Strauss Chiropractic Center since September 1968.

This month we are pleased to feature Mrs. Lee Martini in our series on extraordinary practice members. Lee is a delightful woman whose entire family has benefited from her in-depth understanding of chiropractic. Interestingly, she first tried chiropractic at the age of 19 when a neighbor suggested that it “would be good for her nerves.” Although they were referring to the particularly stressful job she had at the time, little did she know that she was on her way to a very sophisticated understanding of chiropractic.

Despite a positive response to her first adjustment, Lee would not receive her second for nearly a decade after an extended illness following the birth of her second child. With 2 small children 16 months apart, Lee suffered a total collapse. Yet numerous trips to the medical doctor and a variety of tests left them puzzled. In fact, the doctors told her, there was nothing wrong with her--that it was “just her nerves” and that she should take some tranquilizers. Finally the light bulb went off!

Desperate to get well and remembering her first chiropractic experience she decided to try it again. This chiropractor wanted to see her three times a week and despite the $15 per visit fee (an exorbitant amount considering that her mortgage was only $101/month), she continued under his care as she was noticeably improving. Oddly, she doesn’t recall how she heard about Dr. Joe but it changed the course of her life. She immediately thought, “That’s the best buy in town! Not only can I go, but so can the children.” And so they did--herself, and her husband as well as Mark and Jenni. She remained under care throughout her 3rd and 4th pregnancies and after which both John and Liza also joined in the family fun.

Lee noted during the course of the interview that chiropractic has played a key role in her raising her children. Growing up they were all of particularly good health and for as long as she could get them in the car and bring them with her, the family came on a regular basis to have their spines checked. She admits as they went out on their own, her children did not always come as regularly as she recommended. Occasionally, Lee will be accompanied by one of her nine grandchildren, usually Jessica. Earlier this year, in an extraordinary example of the influence she has had on them, her son John and his wife, Dawn, came to the Strauss Chiropractic together with their first child, Ethan just 2 weeks old to have their new family checked for subluxations. Lee and Max now have 9 grandchildren.

When asked to describe her feelings about Dr. Joe, she stumbled for words. “I love him. He is patient, kind, understanding--simply a wonderful, wonderful human being. I mean, what kind of person starts this kind of service for the community and asks nothing in return? It’s just marvelous. I just wish everyone could come to realize what a wonderful gift we have here at the Strauss Chiropractic Center.” Lee admits that most people are in disbelief when she tells them about the office. “In a world that is motivated by money, greed and ambition, to meet someone who thinks health cannot be bought—the whole concept simply must have been inspired by a higher source and given to someone who was very special. It’s just extraordinary!”

Lee continues to come even after all these years because she understands that the body is a self-regulating organism. “Let’s face it, we’re alive so there must be something, some organizing force or principle that’s keeping us in existence. Since this force utilizes the spinal column to express itself, having my spine checked regularly is very important to me. Chiropractic just makes sense. It’s one of the best things I could do for myself, better than having my nails done or getting a massage. I love to come for an adjustment and get that life force flowing.”

Lee admits that chiropractic impacts us way beyond our understanding, but that just adds to the reasons why she continues to come after all these years. “When every function of your body is dependent on your nerve system and so many of the things you do everyday can cause your spine to interfere with your nerves, why would you not come regularly to have your spine checked?”

Over the last 30+ years, Lee thinks less has changed than has stayed the same at the Strauss Chiropractic Center. “I like that you can count on things staying the same here. Maybe a new face now and again, but whoever is here always makes you feel welcome and of course the principle has remained the same.” Lee noted that over the last several years as she was reading some books by Deepak Chopra, a popular holistic M.D. with several books on optimal health, she thought to herself, “Isn’t that what Dr. Joe has been saying for the last 35 years?”

In response to what she would like to leave all of those who would be reading this she said, “Treat yourself to something special—enhance your life expression through chiropractic. It’s always good and mother knows what’s best for you is always right.”

Thank you Lee for your enthusiasm and your faithfulness. You cannot know what impact you have had and will have on future generations. We admire your living it out week after week and appreciate your gratitude. We love you Lee.
