Joe & Shirley Wasiakowski

Practice Members of the Strauss Chiropractic Center since July 1975.

In our continuing effort to recognize people who have been practice members of the Strauss Chiropractic Center for extraordinary lengths of time we are pleased to present Shirley and Joe Wasiakowski.

Shirley started at the Strauss Chiropractic Center on July 1, 1975 after her previous chiropractor relocated. She was bothered at the time by frequent and severe headaches. Her husband, Joe, started about a week later after talking with Dr. Joe at Shirley’s visits. He admits now that at the time he was under a lot of pressure from his job as a teacher. Today they are delighted that Shirley no longer has headaches and that Joe enjoys a very active lifestyle as a senior.

When asked what they recall most about their first visit Shirley giggled, “Dr. Joe was awfully young!” Joe recalls that he and Dr. Joe had a mutual friend and how he felt the two of them got to be friends quickly. Shirley and Joe agreed that they always left the office feeling like they had been to a friend’s house. They have in recent years grown comfortable and close to Dr. Judy and love that the Strauss Chiropractic Center now offers five different chiropractors as different people will take to different chiropractors for different reasons. “It’s nice to be able to see a different chiropractor now and again while coming to the same office with the same great hours and the same great fee system.”

Chiropractic has been a part of their routine for over half of their lives. Shirley commented that she’s from a hard working family who has gone to chiropractors for many years. She continues to come today to allow the wisdom of her body to be fully expressed. She and Joe both look forward to coming every Wednesday and if for some reason they can’t make it they come on Friday instead. Shirley says, “Joe and I are active people and we want to stay that way.”

When asked if subluxation was a word they were familiar with they responded, “Of course!” (Music to my ears!) They easily and accurately defined a subluxation as a misalignment of one of the bones of the spine that interferes with the nerve system and communication in the body. When asked if they use the word with friends and family they said, “Oh sure! It’s easy to just say ‘get cracked’ but how will people ever know exactly what a chiropractor does if we don’t use the proper terminology.”

Shirley admits that for awhile she didn’t come regularly because she was too busy, too stressed and/or too tired but knew that she should come. Interestingly, chiropractic works on a physical and a physiological level. It changes how you move, how you feel, and how you are and sub-luxations keep you from feeling the way you should, acting the way you should and being who you should be. So when you think you are too busy, too stressed and too tired—that is precisely the time to get yourself to the chiropractor.

When asked what they did that they thought might cause subluxations in their spines they rattled off a long list including cutting grass, mulching, home repair projects, gardening, wall papering, housecleaning, laying on the sofa, sitting all day at a stressful job, moving furniture and exercising at the gym. It should be noted that their list included both doing too much and doing too little and both things that are thought to be good for you and things that are bad. The fact is subluxation can be caused by all kinds of things. The trick is not to avoid the things that might cause subluxations but instead to have your spine checked regularly so subluxations can be identified and removed.

Joe says he can do lots of things his friends can’t do (some of whom are younger) and Shirley lifts 10-lb weights at the gym which I know for a fact most women half her age can’t do. They both say that they have the good Lord and chiropractic to thank for it. Thank you Shirley and Joe for sharing your stories with us. We appreciate you telling your friends, family and co-workers about chiropractic and we wish you many more happy, healthy and productive years.
